Report: Ohio science teacher burned cross on kids' arms

that's right you crazy religious fanatics--abuse children--good jobClick here to enlarge

An outside investigation has found that an Ohio public school teacher taught creationism in his science class and used a device to burn the image of a cross on students' arms. One family filed a federal lawsuit against Mount Vernon Middle School teacher John Freshwater and the school district last week, saying their child was left with a burn mark for three or four weeks.
The report also says Freshwater was insubordinate in failing to remove a Bible and other religious materials from his classroom.

I remember this asshat. He was the guy who left his bible on his desk. While I don't care what he reads, burning students, whether in a cross shape or anything else, is criminal behavior. As I said when this was last posted, if the buring allegations are true, I hope he is fired and investigated for criminal charges.

I worked in the school system here for 18 years. I cannot imagine any eighth grader even allowing a teacher doing such a thing to them. I know the kids here. They would have all walked out of the classroom and straight into the principal's office en mass. I have seen that happen before, and it was not over something as serious as this! It just would NOT have happened to the kids here.

I hope that teacher does time behind bars for this one. Burning a classroom full of kids is not a trivial thing.

It's times like these when I'm very glad that I homeschool my daughter. Before anyone gets excited, it's technically an independent study program, and we are supervised by a credentialed teacher, and meet with her monthly. We follow a state-approved curriculum, but I can definitely make sure that she isn't told that the Bible is the literal truth about the Universe, or hit over the head continually with conservative Christianity (I say 'conservative,' because Beloved Daughter and I are used to working with Liberal Christians, who tend to be quite flexible in terms of religious perspective). Conservative Christianity, despite the best efforts of those of us involved with Americans United for Separation of Church and State, IS making it into the local schools, as 'history' or 'philosophy.'
