Just in case Obama doesn't understand just how many of us feel .... WORD! Keep your word!!

As Social Security emerged as a target in White House budget negotiations, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) insisted that the retirement program must not be cut as part of any deficit reduction deal.
Social Security, which had been off the table in the deficit talks, reportedly reemerged as President Obama met with congressional leaders.
"Let us be clear," Sanders said. "Social Security has not contributed one nickel to our deficit or our national debt. Social Security is funded by the payroll tax, not the U.S. treasury." The program that benefits more than 50 million seniors and disabled has a $2.6 trillion surplus, he stressed, and will be able to provide full benefits for every eligible American for the next 25 years.
"I am especially disturbed that the president is considering cuts in Social Security after he campaigned against cuts in 2008," Sanders added. Obama made his position clear on Sept. 6, 2008, when he said: "John McCain's campaign has suggested that the best answer for the growing pressures on Social Security might be to cut cost of living adjustments or raise the retirement age. Let me be clear: I will not do either," Obama said.
"The American people expect the president to keep his word," Sanders said.

6/12 - Romney's record at Bain "Sterling"~ praised Bill Clinton
From 'the President's Club':
*After Nixon died, Clinton compared the death with the loss of his mother
*Clinton came to rely on Nixon’s advice
*Nixon ingratiated himself with so many of his successors, particularly Mr. Clinton.
*George H.W. Bush’s ... relationship with Bill Clinton has grown so close
*Clinton is now referred to in the Bush family as the “Brother From Another Mother”
*Mr. Clinton / George W. Bush, who have become unexpectedly close and also worked on joint endeavors
The WaPo article that alleges Obama put Social Security "on the table" in budget negotiations is being questioned; the White House Press Secretary has called it "overwritten." That's pretty much him saying that the (unnamed!) sources lied.
Sounds like SS is on the debt ceiling table to me.

Obama Offers Ultimatum on Debt Limit and Taxes
Washington, D.C. (July 11, 2011)
By Michael Cohn, Accounting Today
Obama said Monday that it was possible to construct a package that would involve both parties in taking on their “sacred cows,” including “meaningful changes to Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid that would preserve the integrity of the programs and keep our sacred trust with our seniors, but make sure those programs were there for not just this generation but for the next generation; that it is possible for us to bring in revenues in a way that does not impede our current recovery, but is fair and balanced.”

Obama has to meet the tens of millions of people who will be negatively impacted by cuts in Social Security. How will these people replace the income? They may ask their children for money, but odds are the children are financial strapped as is. Children of the elderly have to pay for their children and their parents?
My Dad died in 2006 at age 90, and my Mom in 2008 at age 88. They were very proud that throughout their retirement they did not have to ask my sister and I for money to live on.
I don't know, but the latest news today is word coming from Obama's WH that they aren't sure if SS checks will be mailed out after the 2nd of August. If Obama wants to avoid a nasty rap over Seniors coughing up their last breath if the debt ceiling isn't passed ... he'd better send word that Seniors WILL get their checks no matter what. There's still a large voting base out there who still cares for their parents who are dependent on their SS checks.... life and death dependent. Not only would Obama lose most Senior voters but he lose many of their voting kids as well when Mom and Dad are forced to live with them during a time when their incomes are already half shot.

I didn't see anything that said any part of anything to do with Social Security was going to pay for anything in the general fund. I see an attempt to say, hey, if we're going to talk about this stuff, let's get it all on the table and see what we've got. That doesn't mean that Obama is taking any particular position on cutting benefits or raising taxes or anything at all.
This is hysteria, scout. There's nothing there. We'll all have to wait and see, but I'm going to tell you this: I keep hearing stuff like this, and I keep finding out things like, well, no, actually, it turns out that this other index, the one based on people sometimes substituting across product classes, raises payments faster at the beginning of a crisis; it also lowers them faster at the end.
Of course, in order to figure that out, you have to actually take a look at how the statistic works. I've linked to the site that talks about the technical details. Did you read that stuff? Do you understand that as inflation goes up, this will respond to it faster? Can you see why, in peoples' buying patterns, you have to allow not only for the fact that when prices go up, you switch not merely from beef to less beef, or even cheaper beef, but to chicken? And when they go down, back to beef again? This is how real people behave in the market.
Now, I don't mind lookin' over his shoulder. If any of the things you're worrying about actually happened, they'd be pretty bad. What I'm objectin' to is jogglin' his elbow. Let the man work. He's said what his positions are. Aren't those what you voted for him for? They're what I voted for him for. The only promise he's broken was to close Gitmo- and even that is only because the Republicans refused to fund it. The President doesn't hold the purse. As we found out in Iran-Contra, finding creative ways around that is generally a felony. Not that everybody does time for it or anything. Personally I'm in favor of my Democratic President not doing anything like Iran-Contra. Maybe it's just me.
This gives me some hope.... both Brown and Sanders are waiting in the wings to pounce on any attacks on the SS program.

Last Friday, House minority leader Nancy Pelosi held a press conference to announce that House Democrats should oppose a debt-ceiling agreement that included any cuts in Medicare or Social Security. Meanwhile, over in the Senate, Sherrod Brown (D., Ohio) and Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) announced that they would filibuster any deal that included changes to those programs, and possibly Medicaid as well.

It is solvent to pay 100% of benefits to 2036, then 75% of benefits to 2085.

A SUMMARY OF THE 2011 ANNUAL REPORTS
Social Security and Medicare Boards of Trustees
"After 2022, trust fund assets will be redeemed in amounts that exceed interest earnings until trust fund reserves are exhausted in 2036, one year earlier than was projected last year. Thereafter, tax income would be sufficient to pay only about three-quarters of scheduled benefits through 2085."
Like I said in Bernie's words .... 'Hands off SS' during this debt ceiling fiasco.

webhead, as someone who qualifies for SS in 2037, those numbers are unacceptable to me, unless I only have to give 75% as much, since they'd be cutting my benefits by 25%.
There you go, scout. Answer N.U. and tell him why he should put in enough to keep from having to do anything, in order to get only 3/4 of what you're getting.
You're ripping him off. You want him to vote for that.
Like I said to webby, good luck with that. I won't be voting for it; I have an ethical problem with it. I vote we fix it now if we have the votes.
Social Security is the government's contract with it's citizens to provide assistance in their later years, but it should have been reviewed years ago, instead of being held up like some sacred cow. It should have never been used as a slush fund to raid to make up for budgetary shortfalls, which is has been since it's inception.
Like an old car, it needs to be overhauled in order for it to function as it once did.
No, only since Reagan. I know that seems like deepest darkest dinosauriest old times to you young'uns, but the people you're talking to here remember it well.
It was borrowed from; which is fine as long as it's paid back. That's what the Reprehensibles are trying to get out of: paying it back.
Not a good analogy.
