Hoyer: No Help For Boehner On Raising Debt Limit If Taxes Off The Table

    Brian Beutler | July 6, 2011

The Democrats' vote-counter in the House of Representatives says the GOP will need his help to raise the national debt limit -- but they won't get it if they don't put everything on the table, including tax revenues.

"Speaker Boehner needed Democratic votes to pass keeping government running, even at minimal levels," Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) told reporters at his weekly Capitol briefing, in response to a question from TPM. "So my presumption is [Senator] Schumer is right."

    .

"I've told Mr. Boehner that I will help," Hoyer said. "Now I'm not going to help on some draconian do it my way or the highway vote, but we Democrats are prepared to co-operate in order to assure that the creditworthiness of the United States is not put at risk and to move towards a fiscally responsible path...everything needs to be on the table, and when I say everything I mean everything.... Revenues need to be a significant part of it."

Pelosi's put hers in, too, and she's got more clout than Hoyer does. The Republicans are in real trouble over this. They thought they had problems before, now they've got no way to overcome a veto, and they're not even sure they can pass a budget if they negotiate it with Obama.

    This is classic.

Atta girl Pelosi .... stick to your guns. I heard Hoyer today on tv basically saying the same thing. This could be historic if the Dems all stick together and don't back down at the 11th hr! Cue applause sign please!!

Let's talk REPIG House politics, just for a sec.

Cantor has to oppose any tax increases in order to stay in good standing with the tea partiers.

Boehner has to oppose tax increases if he doesn't want a challenge for the top REPIG leadership position from Cantor. And, Boehner has to make a deal with the Dems if he wants to say he can lead the House and remain the leader.

Boehner is in a no-win situation. I suspect he's also going to get a tough run for re-election (Ohioans are pissed at Kasich, and will turn out in droves in November) to his House seat, let alone any REPIG leadership position in the new Congress in 2013.

But the killer is that Cantor and Boehner did not have public opinion on their side. But, they have Obama the community organizer who may make it easier for the REPIGs by giving in too mush instead of fighting hard while knowing public opinion is on his side.

Either way, the REPIG leadership in the House will not be able to deliver to meet public opinion expectations.

In addition to what Web said ..... here's how I see where it stands. Along with the the majority public opinion calling for taxing the filthy rich to pay down the debt, most DC Dems agree as well. So, here we have a slam dunk situation in which just about everybody says .... tax the rich bastards!!! Obama doesn't even have a battle on his hands other than the few Repukes who cry foul over everything anyways. If Obama allows the Corp Repukes to win out on this one, he'll be standing completely naked on the front porch in day light. He may still get reelected even after if he allows the Corp rich off the hook again, but it's only because Corp Amerika bought him another 4 yrs to carry forth the same ole GOP crap policies. Here's where Obama can really shed that suspicion. It's up to Obama to listen to the majority population of this nation in which he's leading ... and the majority Democratic Party in DC who serves under him ..... to stand hard and tall against these cut throat lying Corp Bible thumpin' Repuke bastards and hold these sorry shits accountable for these last 10 yrs of economically raping the dog shit out of the USA ... our USA!!! It's time for Obama to pull his pants up ... roll up his sleeves and yank down McConnell's, Cantor's and Boner's pants!! The bottom line is .... we have his back!! Does he have ours is the 100 trillion dollar question?? We're about to see just where we the ppl stand in Obama's eyes real soon.
