President Obama dropped a bipartisan bombshell today, announcing he will award the Presidential Medal of Freedom next year to ex-President George H.W. Bush.

The magnanimous gesture of bestowing the nation’s highest civilian honor to the 41st U.S. President came a day after ex-President George W. Bush gave a respectful nod to Obama at the groundbreaking of his library in Dallas.

“The decisions of governing are on another President’s desk, and he deserves to make them without criticism from me,” Bush said at the site of his future library at Southern Methodist University.

Not plague, not famine, but much worse,
He cursed us with a congress.

I would think the heroes from Tucson should be getting this medal. That being said, though, it may be the result of GHW Bush's lifetime achievements. Ignore the R after his name for a minute.

    1. WWII pilot - youngest aviator in the military (age 18) at the time of his earning his wings, served honorably in battle in the Philippines Sea
    2. House of Representatives - voted to abolish the draft
    3. Ambassador to the UN - 1971-1973
    4. Envoy to China - generally positive, but nothing remarkable.
    5. Director of the CIA - credited with getting the CIA to be viewed in a positive light again after the Church Committee investigations
    6. Was passed over for the VP nomination in 1976 due to intervention on behalf of Rockefeller by one Donald Rumsfeld (Yes, THAT Rumsfeld)
    7. Vice President of the US (1981-1989)
    8. President of the US (1989-1993) - engaged in Operation Desert Shield/Storm and, against the recommendations of Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney (Yes, the same Don and Dick), chose to not exceed the UN mandate, directly ordering our troops out of Iraq and back into Kuwait. Also fixed a problem if the US' own doing in removing Manuel Noriega as leader of Panama.
    9. The enormous works with charitable organizations since leaving the presidency.

If this were a prominent Democrat, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

You forgot to mention that Bush took over for Reagan in 1984 when it became apparent that Reagan was suffering from Alzheimers and could not be trusted with the Nuclear Football!

Moreover, you forgot to mention that Bush called Reagan's "Trickle Down" theory what it really is: "Voodoo Economics".

Oh, and Bush serving as CIA Director learned how to develop a secretive administration that he was able to guide Cheney when Cheney was Bush's Secretary of Defense! So there is an enormous connection of Bush and Cheney.

Yeah, give the fucktard Bush a medal. Why not!

Oh, N.U., I think your conservative Republican political position is showing. You better zip up the donkey suit you're wearing.

webhead, there is no proof that Reagan was suffering from Alzheimer's in 1984 beyond unsubstatiated speculation on th epart of Reagan's son, so your statement about the football is moot. However, in fairness, I believe that Bush had the football every time Reagan went in for surgery.

Bush also learned in the CIA about the necessity of keeping an apolitical intelligence environment. Why do you think Bush refused to exceed the UN mandate to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait only? His intelligence pointed out two critical things, both of which his son (and VP Cheney) patently ignored due to it not fitting with their "We want to attack Iraq" mentality: 1. Saddam Hussein was a known quantity that, however detestable, had to remain in place to avoid civil war in Iraq. 2. Invading Iraq would involve a protracted expensive occupation.

Bush 41 actually listened to his intelligence gatherers. Bush 43 (really Dick Cheney) cherry-picked intelligence to paint the picture he wanted.

There was still an US invasion and occupation under 41. This is what really started to heat things up in the ME and other parts of the word to date after the US/military contractors first squatted in Iraq, etc. IMHO

Except there wasn't. As I was in the military at that time, I can speak to this point a little finer than others. The closest we got to an occupation at that point was the establishment of the two "No fly" zones and the use of the military by Red Adair and others to put out the oil well fires left by the Iraqi military.

It doesn't change the fact that, as usual, the presumption is that if it has an R after it's name, it must be evil/wrong. And you all wonder why there's a chippy discourse between D and R. I could substitute a D for the R in the first sentence at the sentiment would be just as accurate on any conservative boards.

I don't know where you got the idea that George H.W. Bush kept the CIA from being used politically.
That's not what any of the former CIA agents who have written books in the last decade have said about him.
In fact, he politicized it far more than any other President since Eisenhower.
Joe Wilson certainly doesn't agree with that opinion either.

Plus the fact, George H.W. intended to invade Iraq during his 2nd term in the White House, but Ross Perot prevented that from happening in 1992.

    That's it in a nutshell.
If we hadn't of stationed so many troops in Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia then the tensions in the ME would not have been nearly what they were by 2000.

The ME has been unstable for around 800 years. To say otherwise completely ignores history. The closest we have ever gotten to a modern day peace in the Middle East was right after WWI, except the colonial powers (England and France, primarily, but with 'help' from the US) made damn sure the Middle Easterners couldn't get it hammered out, all due to Britain and France's want to keep their colonies (and the oil) all to themselves.

Bush I's invasion quickened the destablization of the ME while during the 1990s, in which, both N Korea and Iran began their nuclear (arms) programs after Pakistan was already one. It also opened the door for US military industrial contractors to flood the region by. The US occupation in the ME, starting in the 1990s, caused countries to prepare for the US / PNAC NWO crusades. The stuff, that destroys worlds in modern times.

This is the reason for Obama to be pin a damn medal on Daddy Bush's chest.

The New World Order that Bush has in mind is, in fact, not so new. It is an attempt to turn the clock back to the pre-World War II era of unchallenged colonial domination and plunder of the land, labor, and resources of Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East by a handful of industrialized capitalist countries. Unlike the old world order of outright colonialism, the new world order will be imposed by Stealth aircraft, guided missiles, smart bombs, and tactical nuclear weapons - not l9th-century gunboats. This is based on grand geopolitical strategy that flows like water from Pentagon-sponsored think tanks in Washington. It leaves out the most important factor in the equation of the Middle East - the broad mass of the people whose hatred for foreign domination and capacity to struggle remains as powerful as ever.

The U.S. and its imperialist allies have won a temporary victory in the Middle East. But their policy of military domination to stop the natural progression of history - for people to liberate themselves from the yoke of colonialism - cannot succeed.
