    Re: WWII Aircraft (and more)

According to an old VHS Series on WWII Planes I have... the Propeller was huge... It needed to be in order to get the speed they wanted...
If the wings went straight out (like most planes), the propeller would have hit the ground....
So, they lifted the plane up a little bit by sticking the landing gear at the bottom of the gull wing...

A couple of years ago, a Republican committee staff director told me candidly (and proudly) what the method was to all this obstruction and disruption. Should Republicans succeed in obstructing the Senate from doing its job, it would further lower Congress’s generic favorability rating among the American people. By sabotaging the reputation of an institution of government, the party that is programmatically against government would come out the relative winner.

This sounds right! The propeller was gigantic! So was the engine. If the landing gear is housed in the wings, then the wings had to be lower or the landing gear would have looked like stilts, given the size of the prop.

    This from Wiki:
The F4U incorporated the largest engine available at the time, the 2,000 hp (1,500 kW) 18-cylinder [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Double Wasp [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]. To extract as much power as possible, a relatively large, 13 feet 4 inches (4.06 m) [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Hydromatic three-blade [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] was used. To accommodate a folding wing, the designers considered retracting the main landing gear rearward, but for the [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] selected, it was difficult to fit undercarriage struts long enough to provide sufficient clearance for the large propeller. Their solution was an [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], a similar layout to the one used by Germany's [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] dive bomber, considerably shortening the length of the main gear legs.[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] The [Only registered and activated users can see links. ] of the wing's center-section also permitted the wing and fuselage to meet at the optimum angle for minimizing [Only registered and activated users can see links. ], without the need for wing root fairings.[Only registered and activated users can see links. ] Offsetting these benefits, the bent wing was more difficult to construct and weighed more than a straight one.

So... Trivia time!!! Why did this plane have the Gull Wing design (those crooked wings)???

Fold up wings for air craft carrier storage. I know nothing about 400 mph, but if so it probably lessens drag.

On edit: learn to read all the previous posts before posting. Oh well, I was partly right.

INSANITY IS NOT A PLEA. IT'S A WAY OF LIFE. Click here to enlarge

Some hearty knaves and simple fools,
    Some apish and pragmatic mules,
    Some servile acquiescing fools,
    These, these comprise a congress.

When Jove resolved to send a curse,
And all the woes of life rehearse,
Not plague, not famine, but much worse,
He cursed us with a congress.
