If the wings went straight out (like most planes), the propeller would have hit the ground....
So, they lifted the plane up a little bit by sticking the landing gear at the bottom of the gull wing...

This sounds right! The propeller was gigantic! So was the engine. If the landing gear is housed in the wings, then the wings had to be lower or the landing gear would have looked like stilts, given the size of the prop.
