Obama needs to be really careful here now, because after today's vote to secede, any real threat to punch Russia in the nose could backfire on us. The next thing to watch for concerning Crimea is if their utilities will be shut off by Kiev. That'll get responses for sure.

Sanctions against Russia will more than likely drive our stock market crazier. Be prepared to see prices hammered on the US consumer never experienced before. IMHO

    By DAVID M. HERSZENHORNMARCH 16, 2014

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — With thousands of heavily-armed Russian troops occupying this perennially embattled peninsula, the voters of Crimea went to the polls on Sunday to vote on secession from Ukraine in a public referendum that Western leaders have declared illegal and vowed to punish with economic sanctions.

With the outcome of the vote virtually a foregone conclusion in a region that shares a language and centuries of history with Russia, the greater suspense lay in how swiftly and forcefully the United States and its European allies would levy threatened sanctions against allies of President Vladimir V. Putin, including senior Russian officials and business leaders. The answers were likely to depend to some degree on whether Mr. Putin showed any signs of acting quickly to annex Crimea or order further military incursion beyond Crimea’s borders, perhaps to seize vital infrastructure including water and energy supplies.

More responses from Russia to US/NATO military exercises near Russia during very high tensions over the Ukraine.

NKorea keeps flexing its tiny nuclear muscle ..... giving a sense of something about to snap over 'there'.

Russia flies warplanes to Belarus for joint combat duty
    by Staff Writers
    Moscow (XNA) Mar 16, 2014

Moscow has deployed six SU-27 fighters and three military transport jets to Belarus, in an apparent reaction to growing NATO activity near the Belarusian border, the Russian defense ministry said Thursday.

"The air crews of the Russian jets will be on combat duty with their Belarusian colleagues for purposes of air reconnaissance and ensuring defense of the air space of the Union State," the Itar- Tass news agency quoted a ministry spokesman as saying.
    .
    .
    .
"In the event of further accumulation of troops formations in the states adjoining Belarus, it will take adequate measures of response on its territory," the Belarusian defense ministry said.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko suggested Wednesday that Russia deploy up to 15 planes in his country in response to the growing NATO activity near the Belarusian border.

Meanwhile, Lukashenko on Thursday declined that he was asking for military assistance from Russia.

"If NATO or someone is making any movements over there in Poland, we have a plan for such a contingency, and we would have to implement it ... I suggested to Russia: let's implement it," the Interfax news agency quoted him as saying.

NKorea threatens to flex nuclear muscle; fires volley of missiles

    Seoul (AFP) March 15, 2014

North Korea has threatened to demonstrate its nuclear deterrence in a move analysts say could indicate the regime is preparing to carry out a fourth atomic test amid long-stalled disarmament talks.

The powerful National Defence Commission (NDC), chaired by leader Kim Jong-Un, said on Friday that the North would continue efforts "to bolster up its nuclear deterrence for self-defence".

"And additional measures will be taken to demonstrate its might one after another as long as the US nuclear threat and blackmail persist as now", it added in a statement carried by Pyongyang state media.

On the face of a conflict with Russia via Ukraine, plan Attack Iran is still in the works. Israel will make certain that it happens. IMHO

    http://ericmargolis.com/2014/03/war-...-to-intensify/

    March 22, 2014

As Syria lies dying, western media cries, “we must save Syria’s suffering children.” Indeed so, among Syria’s nine million internal and external refugees, some 450,000 are children.

All civil wars are bloody and cruel, but Syria’s strife has reached new extremes of violence and mass civilian suffering as the US and Saudi Arabia use this once beautiful, bountiful nation as a proxy battleground against Iran.

    .
    .
    .

A similar madness has descendent on Syria as its many ethnic and religious groups tear one another’s throats. Syria’s 630,000 Palestinian refugees have suffered frightfully, caught between the warring parties.

But as we lament the plight of Syria’s refugees, let’s remember that this brutal war was begun by the Western Powers and Saudis, is financed by them, and could be stopped at anytime if Washington and Riyadh give the order.

    .
    .
    .

Today, Syria is in ruins. It joins Afghanistan and Iraq who also defied the will of the United States, and paid the price. Three years into the war, the Assad government appears to be slowly winning the conflict, aided by Iran, Russia, and, to a modest degree, Hezbullah.

    .
    .
    .

More disturbingly, Israel launched another attack on Syria last week after one of its patrols likely hit an old landmine. Israel and its US supporters are determined to crush the Assad regimes as the first step in overthrowing Iran.

Given the failure of the anti-Assad rent-a-jihadis, Israel may soon intervene to destroy Assad’s air force and armored formations. Israel is getting ready to massively attack Hezbullah in Lebanon in yet another attempt to eradicate the Shia resistance movement.

The US almost openly entered Syria’s war last fall until Russia’s deft diplomacy pulled the rug out from beneath Washington’s feet. But powerful factions in the US are still urging air and naval attacks on Syria.

NATO has gathering concern over Russia's presence on Eastern Ukraine's border. Obama heads out this week to gather support for NATO while giving friendly hugs to the Saudis (since they are drifting away from the US dollar).

    BRUSSELS Sun Mar 23, 2014 7:25am EDT

(Reuters) - NATO's top military commander said on Sunday that Russia had a large force on Ukraine's eastern border and said he was worried it could pose a threat to Moldova's mainly Russian-speaking separatist Transdniestria region.

NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, voiced concern about Moscow using a tactic of snap military exercises to prepare its forces for possible rapid incursions into a neighboring state, as it had done in the case of Ukraine's Crimea region.

President Obama is holding an emergency meeting with G7 leaders in the Netherlands today following Russia’s annexation of Crimea. The session comes as the Russian government continues to strengthen its control, seizing more Crimean bases and detaining Ukrainian commanders. Earlier today, the Ukrainian government said it’s ordered all of its forces to withdraw in the wake of Russia’s annexation. On Sunday, the top NATO commander in Europe, U.S. Air Force General Philip Breedlove, warned Russia has amassed enough troops on Ukraine’s eastern border to threaten more post-Soviet states.

Turkish army artillery pounds west Syria

Turkish army has fired several rounds of artillery toward western Syria as Ankara seeks to renew its assistance to foreign-backed militants fighting against the Damascus government.

On Wednesday, Turkish forces fired across the frontier into a border region, which is administratively part of Syria’s western province of Latakia.

The development comes after Turkey shot down a Syrian fighter jet on Sunday.

Russian fighter jet makes close passes near US warship in Black Sea

By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Russian fighter jet made multiple, close-range passes near an American warship in the Black Sea for more than 90 minutes Saturday amid escalating tensions in the region, U.S. military officials said Monday.

In the first public account of the incident, the officials said the Russian Fencer made 12 passes, and flew within 1,000 yards of the USS Donald Cook, a Navy destroyer, at about 500 feet above sea level.

The U.S. warship issued several radio queries and warnings using international emergency circuits, but the Russian aircraft did not respond.

AFRICOM Goes to War on the Sly
U.S. Officials Talk Candidly (Just Not to Reporters) about Bases, Winning Hearts and Minds, and the “War” in Africa
    By Nick Turse

What the military will say to a reporter and what is said behind closed doors are two very different things -- especially when it comes to the U.S. military in Africa. For years, U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) has maintained a veil of secrecy about much of the command’s activities and mission locations, consistently downplaying the size, scale, and scope of its efforts. At a recent Pentagon press conference, AFRICOM Commander General David Rodriguez adhered to the typical mantra, assuring the assembled reporters that the United States “has little forward presence” on that continent. Just days earlier, however, the men building the Pentagon’s presence there were telling a very different story -- but they weren’t speaking with the media. They were speaking to representatives of some of the biggest military engineering firms on the planet. They were planning for the future and the talk was of war.
    .
    .
    .
The Naval Facilities Engineering Command’s Wildeman talked up the challenges of working in an environment in which the availability of resources was limited, the dangers of terrorism were real, and there was “competition for cooperation with [African] countries from some other world powers.” This was no doubt a reference to increasing Chinese trade, aid, investment, and economic ties across the continent.

He also left no doubt about U.S. plans. “We will be in Africa for some time to come,” he told the contractors. “There’s lots more to do there.”

Cook expanded on this theme. “It’s a big, big place,” he said. “We know we can’t do it alone. So we’re going to need partners in industry, we’re going to need… local nationals and even third country nationals.”

    AFRICOM at War

For years, senior AFRICOM officers and spokesmen have downplayed the scope of U.S. operations on the continent, stressing that the command has only a single base and a very light footprint there. At the same time, they have limited access to journalists and refused to disclose the number and tempo of the command’s operations, as well as the locations of its deployments and of bases that go by other names. AFRICOM’S public persona remains one of humanitarian missions and benign-sounding support for local partners.

“Our core mission of assisting African states and regional organizations to strengthen their defense capabilities better enables Africans to address their security threats and reduces threats to U.S. interests,” says the command. “We concentrate our efforts on contributing to the development of capable and professional militaries that respect human rights, adhere to the rule of law, and more effectively contribute to stability in Africa.” Efforts like sniper training for proxy forces and black ops missions hardly come up. Bases are mostly ignored. The word “war” is rarely mentioned.

TomDispatch’s recent investigations have, however, revealed that the U.S. military is indeed pivoting to Africa. It now averages far more than a mission a day on the continent, conducting operations with almost every African military force, in almost every African country, while building or building up camps, compounds, and “contingency security locations.” The U.S. has taken an active role in wars from Libya to the Central African Republic, sent special ops forces into countries from Somalia to South Sudan, conducted airstrikes and abduction missions, even put boots on the ground in countries where it pledged it would not.

“We have shifted from our original intent of being a more congenial combatant command to an actual war-fighting combatant command,” AFRICOM’s Rick Cook explained to the audience of big-money defense contractors. He was unequivocal: the U.S. has been “at war” on the continent for the last two and half years. It remains to be seen when AFRICOM will pass this news on to the American public.

Along with already existing tensions in the South China Sea with Japan, now Vietnam mixes it up with China over an oil rig there. Immediately, the US swap threats with China over this. How ironic would this be if another declared world war boiled down to a Vietnam spark .... once our enemy during our lifetime!!!

So far, 2 Chinese are dead with many injured.

Pentagon Press Conference Turns Into Heated Debate Between Top Generals From US And China

    * Richard Sisk, Military.com

    * May 15, 2014, 6:52 PM

A top Chinese general Thursday strongly defended Beijing's territorial claims over disputed islands in the South and East China Seas and charged that the U.S. rebalance of forces to the Pacific was encouraging unrest in the region.

Gen. Fang Fenghui, chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army, said "the rebalancing strategy of the U.S. has stirred up some of the problems which make the South China Sea and the East China Sea not so calm as before."

Fang warned that China would respond to any attempts by Vietnam, Japan or other neighbors to assert their own claims over the disputed islands and reefs.

"We do not create trouble but we are not afraid of trouble," Fang said at a Pentagon news conference after meetings with Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
    .
    .
    .
"We'll go because we can and should, and we'll go because we have to," Dempsey said of the rebalance. Dempsey also told Fang "We will respond to threats."

China defiant as U.S. expresses ‘serious concern’ over sea feud with Vietnam
    By Agence France-Presse
    Friday, May 16, 2014

Vietnam has been shaken by its worst anti-China unrest in decades following Beijing’s deployment of an oil rig in contested South China Sea waters, which triggered ramming incidents involving Vietnamese and Chinese vessels.

As tensions mounted, a top Chinese general warned that Beijing “cannot afford to lose an inch” of what it considers its territory.

China has accused Hanoi of “connivance” with protesters who have targeted hundreds of foreign-owned factories in Vietnam, as long-simmering enmity between the communist rivals boiled over.

Two Chinese citizens were killed and more than 100 injured, Beijing’s foreign ministry said, expressing “serious concern”.

China’s state-run Global Times newspaper turned up the rhetoric with a strident editorial supporting the use of “non-peaceful” measures against Vietnam and the Philippines.

Kiev ready for ‘final stage’ of military op in E. Ukraine[/b]
    Published time: May 21, 2014

Acting President Aleksandr Turchinov says Kiev is ready to “clear eastern Ukraine of terrorists” in a final stage of their military operation, dubbed punitive by Moscow. This comes just after the parliament’s call for immediate troop withdrawal.

"We have just held a meeting with [national] security forces, we are ready for a final stage of the anti-terrorist operation. In the coming time we are ready to mop up Donetsk and Lugansk regions from terrorists,” Ukraine’s coup-imposed president, Aleksandr Turchinov, declared on Wednesday.

Turchinov also ordered security forces to "restore peace and calmness in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions,” an official statement posted on Ukraine’s parliament website said. According to Turchinov, people there are “changing attitude” and “have begun to realize that terrorists and separatists are leading the region into the abyss."

The United States has contacted junta leaders to deliver the message, Harf said.

“We urge the immediate restoration of civilian rule, a return to democracy and, obviously, respect for human rights during this period of uncertainty,” she said.

Under domestic law, the United States is obligated to suspend assistance to foreign militaries that overthrow elected governments.

Secretary of State John Kerry earlier strongly condemned Thursday’s coup, saying there was “no justification” and that the move would have “negative implications” for relations.

South America rejects US sanctions on Venezuela

    Updated: 2014-05-24T17:26:53Z

    The Associated Press

The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday is expected to debate a bipartisan bill that would order the Obama administration to ban visas and freeze the assets of Venezuelan officials who've committed abuses during the past three months of unrest. Similar legislation has already cleared the Senate foreign relations committee.

The Obama administration has condemned President Nicolas Maduro's crackdown on protests but wants to hold off on applying sanctions to give more time to dialogue.

This little bit of inside scary information by DEBKA File has me a little concerned too. The language coming out of Congress to give Obama the power to use military action against Iran after mid Jan 2015 tells me that in the either, or case that the West (US/Israel) is prepared to strike Iran over its nuclear program feels more real than ever before.

    http://www.debka.com/article/23942/T...tponed-to-2015

For more than a year, debkafile has been following the back-channel talks the Obama administration has kept going with Tehran through a hub in the Omani capital of Muscat. They have been handled by Undersecretary of State William Burns and Vice President Joe Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sulllivan. Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the two diplomats were told to give this track “a last push” this summer, in order to bring it to a successful conclusion in time for the July deadline.

But nothing has gone according to plan.

The mid-May round of six-power talks with Iran in Vienna broke up without assent on essential points. The gaps between Washington and Tehran on the two tracks, the official one in Vienna and the private one through Muscat, are widening instead of closing.

In Tehran itself, the omnipotent Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has clipped the wings of the pro-diplomacy President Rouhani and curtailed his leeway for concessions on Iran’s nuclear program.
A severe crisis in relations is also developing between Washington and Jerusalem over dissonant approaches to Iran’s nuclear advances, its ballistic missile arsenal and the Islamic Republic’s Middle East designs.
Because of all these constraints, the Obama administration in the last week of April reached two important decisions:

    1. To postpone the deadline for a final nuclear accord with Iran from July 2014 to January 15, 2015 – possibly not for the last time - a delay which is viewed by Israel as extremely problematic.
The commitment undertaken by Tehran under the November interim accord - not to use its advanced IR2 centrifuges for rapid uranium enrichment - was valid for only six months, during which a final agreement was supposed to have been negotiated to take its place.
Therefore, the discussions conducted in the current rounds of talks on the number of centrifuges and the amount of enriched uranium Iran is allowed to stockpile are meaningless. Once the extra-fast centrifuges are spinning, neither Washington nor Jerusalem can tell any longer how much enriched material the Iranians are producing.
debkafile’s military sources quote the Israeli experts involved in national policy-making on Iran as determining that, with the diplomatic track dragging into limbo and Iran off the hook of its interim commitments, Tehran will be able to reach the nuclear threshold in two to three months’ time, i.e. by July-August.

    2. In a move to dissuade Israel from resorting to military action to curb this process, the White House is drafting legislature that would empower the president to use force against Iran without referring back to Congress, if Tehran was found cheating on its nuclear commitments.
No one in Washington or Tehran believes President Barack will actually use military force against Iran. However, prior congressional endorsement of his military option might, Obama hopes, hold Israel back and provide extra leverage in the negotiations with Iran, which he is determined to continue notwithstanding their futility.

For several days now, Israel has bombed parts of Gaza after kidnapping and the killing of teens from both sides that has sparked a more intense retaliation from both sides. The rest of the ME continues to unravel while ISIS has thrown Maliki's Iraq into chaos. It's even brought the US to send back combat troops (advisers) to Iraq. The global time bomb is ticking louder.

UN Aims to Increase Aid for Growing Refugee Crisis

Israeli ground troops continue to push deeper into the Gaza Strip today, backed by tanks and artillery fire, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has promised to “significantly widen” the offensive in the days to come.

The ground invasion began Thursday afternoon, after the brief “humanitarian ceasefire” ended, and the death toll is once again spiking, with at least 341 now confirmed killed on the Palestinian side, with the wounded toll approaching 2,400. One Israeli civilian was killed in a mortar strike earlier this week, and an Israeli soldier was reported slain today during the invasion.

270 Syrian Troops, Guards Killed in ISIS Takeover of Gas Field

by Jason Ditz, July 18, 2014

In what is shaping up to be among the bloodiest single exchanges of the entire Syrian Civil War, ISIS moved against an important gas field in Homs Province yesterday, seizing it after a 12-hour battle.

The initial reports said about 23 people were dead, but there were hundreds missing at the time, and the news isn’t good. The latest figures from rebel mouthpiece the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights puts the toll at 270 killed, including Syrian troops, paramilitary guards, and workers.

Even this massive toll may not be the end of it, as 90 other guards and workers who were at the site still remain unaccounted for, and were believed captured by ISIS during the attack.

ISIS Sieges East Syria Airport, Aims to Control Main Oil Province

by Jason Ditz, July 18, 2014

The conflict was inevitable, as ISIS has already taken materially the entire Deir Ezzor Province of Syria under their control. Today they looked to take that last major piece, the Syrian military airport.

The air base is not only it as far as territory in Deir Ezzor outside of ISIS hands, but is also Syria’s government’s last major airport in the nation’s east, from which strikes along the Iraq border have come.

Obama Slams Russia Over Plane as GOP Hawks Beat War Drums

McCain Sees Direct US Military Involvement 'Just for Openers'
by Jason Ditz, July 18, 2014

There’s still no concrete evidence as to what happened to Malaysia Airline Flight MH17, but US officials were quick to jump on the blame Russia bandwagon, and are sticking to it, hoping to turn the tragedy to political gain as a well to push their hawkish agendas.

President Obama loudly demanded Russia immediately end all aid to eastern Ukrainian rebels, and insisted that “we don’t have time for games” in a speech condemning Russia. He did, at the very least, rule out starting World War 3 over this.

The usual suspects in the GOP aren’t nearly so circumspect about their saber rattling, however, with Sen. John McCain (R – AZ) demanding broad sanctions against Russia, massive shipments of US weapons to the Ukrainian military, and direct deployments of US troops “just for openers,” with more escalation, presumably, continuing in spite of the lack of evidence.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R – NH) centered on the sanctions front, demanding Iranian-style sanctions against Russia for the “act of terrorism.” And if you think that’s as far as sanction-mongering goes, you’ve clearly forgotten Rep. Peter King (R – NY).

Rep. King not only demanding sanctions but an outright embargo on all of Russia, including banning all flights from leaving Russian airspace. King lamented that the Europeans needed to “show some guts” and go along with his act of war.

Where are we now .... in dangerous crossroads? Well ..... it appears that we're now approaching the center cross hairs ..... with Russia. After MH-17 was shot down .... warmongers abroad have been busy busy busy pushing for war with Russia. Now, it appears that we are entering the next phase that puts us there .... via Pentagon officials and military advisers. I suspect that Putin will begin entering more of his own military best in Ukraine to answer Pres Obama's call. One can only imagine what future sparks (accidental or intentional) may come of this intervention.

Who will finally back off? Putin? Obama?

Obama orders Pentagon advisers to Ukraine to fend off Putin-backed rebels
    By Maggie Ybarra

    The Washington Times

    Tuesday, July 22, 2014

A team of Pentagon officials is heading to Ukraine to help the country rebuild its fractured military, a mission that lawmakers and analysts expect will result in recommendations for greater military assistance in the country’s fight against pro-Russia separatists amid international outrage over the downing of a commercial airplane.

Within the next few weeks, a group of Defense Department representatives who specialize in strategy and policy will head to Kiev to evaluate specific programs that the United States may want to help bolster, said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman.

Their objective is to work with Ukrainians to “shape and establish an enduring program for future U.S. efforts to support the Ukrainian military through subject-matter expert teams and long-term advisers,” he said.

Putin convenes emergency State Duma meeting on Ukraine - source

KYIV, July 23 /Ukrinform/. State Duma deputies, who are currently on a planned vacation, urgently come to Moscow to participate in an unscheduled meeting because of the situation in eastern Ukraine, a source in the State Duma told Ukrinform on Wednesday.

"Maybe something will happen tomorrow. Now this issue is being solved. Something is being planned, because many deputies come, probably for a quorum. Many deputies arrive... and today they already have to be in Moscow," he said.

According to the source, it is still unknown which document is to be considered by Russian deputies. According to the source, it is clear only that Russia's top-ranking officials "planned something" on the situation in the east of Ukraine if they plan to hold an unscheduled meeting of the State Duma.
