As for my service.
In 1979 I left Fort Benning and spent two years in Gelnhausen as part of 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry. I spent all my time there in Headquarters Company. First as part of S-3, then as a unit armorer (first as an assistant then as armorer). I also spent part of my time there assisting the NBC NCO.
In 1981 I went to Fort Lewis. I spent the first 6 months as a fire team leader, then the last 6 months as training NCO.
At no time was I shot at or in any real danger. I spent most of my field time in places like Wildflicken, Graffenwehrs, Hoenfels and Yakima Firing Center.
