CBS News) NEW YORK "Grey's Anatomy" star Isaiah Washington has formally apologized for using the word "faggot" in the Golden Globes press room Monday night.

"I apologize to T.R., my colleagues, the fans of the show and especially the lesbian and gay community for using a word that is unacceptable in any context or circumstance," he said in a statement sent to The Showbuzz Thursday evening.

Washington opened old wounds backstage at the Golden Globes when he answered a question about the October on-set argument where he allegedly referred to co-star T.R. Knight using a gay slur.

I need some help with this. Was he apologizing for using the word as he was alleged on the set, or for using the word in his denial at the golden globes? If its the former, I applaud his decision to apologize, but questions its motivation. If its for his denial of using the term faggot at the award show, why does he need ot apologize? He was responding to a question. If he never used the word, why is it wrong to expressly deny the word he was accused of using? I imagine his tone has something to do with it, and since I've ot heard the sound clip, I can only assume it was the manner he used it at the globes that was so bad.

my understanding is it stems from a fracas he started with the other actor--i love this show--the only one i watch on tv--so i was rather disappointed in his behavior

Which is why I question the motivation for the apology.
