I feel that this is a great breakthru for Stem Cell Research! It's a great start to possibly win the hearts and minds of the controlling religious right and Catholics who try to block this research for their own selfish personal reasons.

Human stem cells found in amniotic fluid: report
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Stem cells nearly as powerful as embryonic stem cells can be found in the amniotic fluid that protects babies in the womb, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday.
They used them to create muscle, bone, fat, blood vessel, nerve and liver cells in the laboratory and said they believe the placenta and amniotic fluid can provide one more source of the valued cells, which scientists hope will someday transform medicine.
They would also provide a non-controversial source of the cells, which are found with difficulty throughout the body and in days-old embryos.
Embryonic cells are considered the most malleable of the various types of stem cells, but these amniotic fluid-derived cells are a close second, said Dr. Anthony Atala, of the Institute for Regenerative Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, who led the study.
"Our hope is that these cells will provide a valuable resource for tissue repair and for engineered organs as well," Atala said in a statement.
"I feel these cells are pluripotent like human embryonic stem cells."
Pluripotent means the cells can give rise to any type of tissue in the body -- blood, nerve, muscle, and so on. Adult stem cells, found in the tissues and blood of fetuses, babies and adults, are already partly differentiated and are less adaptable.
The use of human embryonic stem cells is controversial in some countries, including the United States.

Great Find Scout. I would like to "challenge" all those who oppose this research too visit a Stem Cell lab, so they can see how unfounded thier fears are. And I would like to challenge them to talk to people who need this surgery because I don't think that am a "toddler killer" because Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery scares the hell out of me.

"toddler killer"?
What happend to their calling pro-research folks "baby killer"?

I think that the New House of Dems should jump all over this new find and push it thru Congress now. To win a partial bill on this should lead up to getting the entire package if needed later on.
This new amniotic finding will take a few years to research further so now is the time for the Dems to set this amniotic research in concrete NOW so to establish the means for the complete embryonic research in time.

Point taken.... nothing that is medically developed is 'affordable' by any stretch of the means for the average Joe or Jane.
I still must support scientific development for the betterment of mankind in our future. Much rather sink a few $100 million into such research rather than $100s of billions for what we do to countries like Afghanistan and Iraq... and now Somalia.

its a bloody waste & a dangerous precident for everyone.
you realize that the property rights considerations of DNA copyright is absolutely mindboggling.
I mean, what if in 300 years ... oops!
you think the human race comes with a money back warranty?
:confused0062[1]:
yeah, breast implant are safe,
we can't even keep BigPharm from killing us now...
hell, you can't keep BigSugar off your FOOD PYRAMID for chrissakes, you want we should trust our own DNA to these goofballs?

ONE does NOT necessitate the OTHER: that's a false dichotomy.

Stem cells nearly as powerful as embryonic stem cells...
But not quite. Research has shown nothing works as well as embryonic stem cells. Can you imagine all the good that we could do if we terminated every unwanted pregnancy and used the stem cells to eradicate Parkinsons, muscular dystrophy, and who knows what else? A double whammy. The poor wouldn't be saddled with babies they can't afford and diseases would be known only by reading history books.

In summary, I take it that you are against Stem Cell Research.... and most other researches also. If I'm wrong about your postion, then please forgive me.
Unfortunately, I also understand that most, if not all researches are mismanaged or highjacked to some degree of it's funds. Then on top of that, the retail costs (end product/services) are marked up for profits. Unfortunately again, that seems to be the way of life in with just about everything.
On a more personal level, for those like 'the Boss' here in DW, what do you or I say to those like him if we don't at least support research into the cure of their disease? I support the hope that it gives them for staying positive in their life ahead.

no, I've *done* research lab work. that's why I have an opinion & a dim view.
BTW: I don't see so much surprise in this research. I'm also surprised I've not heard much about "Nanog ([Only registered and activated users can see links]):  the little protein that could..."
