As you know, the 110th Congress begins today and is expected to consider legislation important to the Parkinson’s community in the first few days of the new Congress, including expansion of the current policy on embryonic stem cell research and funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Stem Cell Research
The new Democratic majority has pledged to bring up the “Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act,” formerly H.R. 810, during the first 100 legislative hours of the 110th Congress.
The bill will be reintroduced in both the Senate and House this week. We will provide you with bill numbers as soon as they are assigned and official.
Unfortunately, the President vetoed this bill in July, 2006. It is expected that both the House and Senate will pass the bill again early this year and the bill will once again be sent to the President.
Please contact your newly elected and incumbent Representative and Senators immediately and ask that they support the Parkinson’s community and hopeful research by voting yes on the “Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act” when it comes up for a vote in the next few days.
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
Also, 2007 funding for the National Institutes of Health was left unfinished last year. Representative David Obey (WI) and Senator Robert Byrd (WV), the incoming Chairs of the Appropriations Committees, have announced that they will continue the current level of funding for all unfinished funding bills, including NIH. There is, however, a chance of getting a badly needed increase in funding.
Please contact your Representative and Senators immediately to urge them to increase funding for the NIH in 2007.
