Jared Polis, the internet entrepreneur from Colorado, is poised to make history as the first non-incumbent out gay man elected to the House of Representatives when he appears on the ballot as the Democratic nominee in a district that last elected a non-Democrat over 30 years ago. Polis emerged the victor in a three-way race Tuesday night against former State Senate president Joan Fitz-Gerald and Will Shafroth. Fitz-Gerald had been backed by Colorado gay philanthropist Tim Gill and other large LGBT donors who gave over $2.1 million to her campaign. Tammy Baldwin was elected to Congress as an out lesbian woman who had served in the Wisconsin Legislature. With 29% of the vote tallied, the Rocky Mountain News declared Polis the victor. Polis, a graduate of Princeton and a former member of the State's Board of Education, helped to develop The Responsible Plan, a program designed to end the US presence in Iraq ([Only registered and activated users can see links]).
