I say we give most all of them pink slips this November for all their "hard" work.

I wonder if Reid is going to do a proforma session again. Not that it matters too much at this point if Bush does appoint some asshole to fill a vacancy. Still, I would like to throw up a roadblock to anything Dubya might even think about wanting to do.

I'd give them a punch in the nose along with those pink slips. Who would have every thot that the 110th Congress would be this apathetic to Goober and his goons? Especially Pelosi. What an EXTREME disappointment!!!!!

Gee but they are worried over their constituents. The country is in turmoil yet they take a vacation with no regard for the plight of the American people. They are no better than Bush.

In all fairness, Congress always takes off for August. It is their time to go home and take care of their constituents. This year the Democratic convention takes place in the latter part of August. I believe the 5 weeks is to accommodate the GOP convention. Although I'm not sure about that.

Xena, I think I heard Friday that they were going to have Pro Forma again this break.

I think this commentary writer from the Examiner explains it very well.

Commentary - Bad things happen in a blind Congress

Aug 3, 2008 2:39 PM (24 mins ago) by Mark Tapscott, The Examiner

The stark truth is our senators and representatives routinely vote on monster bills about which they don’t have a clue because they never read them. Day in and day out, they vote blindly to raise our taxes, waste our hard-earned money and subsidize special interests.

They’re not alone, of course, since typically nobody else has read the bills, either. That includes those swarms of legislative aides and the talking-head journalists pronouncing authoritatively on measures they have only read parts of, if at all. It’s just another way official Washington cons the people beyond the Potomac who pay for everything here.

There are hundreds of behind-the-scenes operators, however, who know very well what is contained in those bills. These are the legions of K Street lobbyists, nonprofit activists and other political insiders who frequently help congressional staffers write legislation.

They better! Otherwise Bush would appoint too many Judges to open slots, and appoint others to work for the RePIGS instead of Americans!

I don't have a problem with a 5 week break - they need to campaign for re-election, ya know!

They could forego the five week vacation and resolve the country's most pressing problems which have so far gone unresolved by them.

Now McCain is publically calling them to come back in. Damn, this will turn into a feather in McShame's hat. The Dems have again shot themselves in the foot.

Why should they? McCane is never there to vote.

True, but it doesn't matter to the sheeple who are being fed this steady line of goobly gook about the Dems not coming back to go to work during August. The Repukes will cry over and over about how the Dems took this LONG vacation while this nation of ppl suffered with high gas prices (even tho gas prices are dropping right now as planned after Goober asked them to do it a few weeks ago.) This is the shit that sticks. But I agree that 5 weeks is too long for Congress to go lay on the beaches when our economy is in such dire straights. Count the days when Congress goes on break during one year. I can't. Too many to keep track of.

The irony here is, The Dems are doing pro-forma sessions (according to Nanette) and the 5 weeks is because of the GOP convention that takes place in the first week of September.

Yeah, McCain said at Sturgis that when he's president congress won't get vacation.

Does the president have that power? I know he has almost every other power these days, thanks to Bush...

Five weeks is a bit much. Not even my father gets that and he works for the government. Heh. They should get the same amount of vacation time which, for my father anyways, is two weeks. Yes that includes the weekends.

The republican's meeting after the House shut down for the recess is nothing but grandstanding. I can see it and I thought that is was a low thing for them to do.

Now having said that, I agree that the House should have stayed in session to work out some of the most serious problems that plague us, but for them to grandstand like they did and produce info to the public with cell phones was just outlandish. It was nothing but a show to try to make people believe that they actually care about our people and our country. They didn't do squat when the House was in session, so why are we supposed to think that they were going to do it if the House had not gone into recess??

Thanks for the 2 welcomes!
Just found this place after googling something like democrats with guns or similar. Seems like this might be a little less "stiff" than DU.

Thanks again.

It is. :) For the most part everyone is cool. Sometimes things can get heated but where is that not found on a message forum? Welcome! Hope to see you around. I mostly hang out in GD.
