Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has had a hard time admitting that the surge in Iraq has been reasonably successful. Sure, Iraq isn’t a success just yet, but the surge has improved daily life tremendously. But, she and her buddies were opposed to the surge from the get-go, saying that a surge would not accomplish anything, so she has to find a clever way to admit the obvious. She has now finally found such a way ([Only registered and activated users can see links])… Sadly, however, there’s nothing clever about it:
Well, the purpose of the surge was to provide a secure space, a time for the political change to occur to accomplish the reconciliation. That didn’t happen. Whatever the military success, and progress that may have been made, the surge didn’t accomplish its goal. And some of the success of the surge is that the goodwill of the Iranians-they decided in Basra when the fighting would end, they negotiated that cessation of hostilities-the Iranians.
