One of the reasons, it is said, that we invaded Iraq ([Only registered and activated users can see links]) was to introduce democracy to a totalitarian nation. But while we are shopping democracy abroad, we have yet to perfect our democracy at home.
When people go to the polls Nov. 7, the manifestations of our imperfect democracy will be rife. The non-partisan Election Reform Information Project predicts problems at the polls, and the NAACP says it will monitor elections in 10 states in which irregularities are a possibility.
It is ironic that U.S. monitors travel the globe to ensure "free and fair" elections when we have so many problems here. Maryland's primary election, for example, was botched in large part when some polling places opened late because an election worker forgot to distribute the activator cards to unlock voting machines....
