View Full Version : Congress to hold hearings on steroid use

Congress announced plans Tuesday to review the use of performance-enhancing drugs, with star-studded hearings scheduled next month and legislation to limit access to steroids and human growth hormone.
Two House panels are planning mid-January hearings featuring former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, author of a bombshell report last week that linked more than 80 baseball players to the illegal use of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Players, likely some of those named in the report, could be invited to testify as well.
Mitchell thinks Congress should give Major League Baseball a chance to implement his recommendations before taking independent action.
"My hope is that Congress will permit the players' association and the commissioner's office to review this report, to digest it, to consult with their own experts, and to work together to come up with the best possible program. And then, give them a chance to see what they can do, and at that point, take a look at it. So I hope that's what will occur," Mitchell told the Portland Press Herald in Maine, according to a report on its Web site.
With Christmas a week away, there's no realistic chance that the 1,200-member players' association could have a meaningful consultation and exchange of views within such a short time, Mitchell said.

I hope they look at the NFL too. Clearly the Colts all used roids to win the superbowl last year. They should take back that championship. The colts, and their fans, are all a bunch of cheaters. :o060::rofl:

I really want to know what Congress is doing investigating Pro Athletes that make millions not to mention MLBand the wealth there for steroid abuse with taxpayer money and time the House could use doing their free-kin jobs.

Steroid use like any chemical dependency is not a crime that injures anyone but themselves, plain and simple.

Doc, what evidence do you have that the Colts did juice? Why make such a dirt tossin' statement, being a lawyer and all?

Why waste the taxpayers money investigating such BS?

Lets face it, its upsurd to think that sports is going to clean up their act--plain and simple. I really don't give a rats azz. Its all about the money and where there is money to be made on performance like sports there will always be someone trying to get the edge.(enhancement supplements)

Like I said, victomless crime, theyonly hurt themselves so it has no business wasting the PEOPLE'S government time and money! Let MLB clean this sheet up with their mucho dinaro.

Same damn thing as that XMAS BS Resolution that passed in Congress by the Christian Right Wing Nuts supported by the spinless Demo-crips, only this is more insane IMHO.

Drug depency like one using steroids is a consentual crime. Its a crime against oneself.
How can anyone justify letting VIOLENT criminals go because of overcrowded prisons when there are beaucoup people behind bars whose only crime is that they are addicted to something or used something that the government said is illegal. This is a health problem, and should be treated as such and not criminally.
If our government treated it this way, it would provide a big time relief to our over crowded tax money asorbing prison systems.
Those using these drugs or illrgal chemicals could then be paying taxes while working a job and going to out patient treatment instead of being this tremendous burden to the taxpayer of the U.S.

I agree 100%. I also think its sad how we jail most people who suffer from mental illness rather than offer treatment that can aid citizens suffering from these issues to become productive working class members. Our prison system is where "we" shove people that "we" don't want to deal with. Its bullshit.

Sorry Doc, flew right by me! LOL
My fault totally Doc, no call for explanation.

Tell me Doc, you know something about them cheating Indy Ponies? LOL

Hey, Colts are a good team and Patriots are a good team - if those STEROID (LOL - kidding) should play again in the playoffs, that there is the Super Bowl in my oppinion.

May the best team win! Don't laugh to hard now--Giants fan here and hope they break the Pats unbeaten streak, last regular game of the year.

Sorry bout that Doc - again my appology for jumping the gun.

A little honesty on how one feels and Presto--we agree on this issue. Thats the way it should be Doc !

Not the agreement but the tolerance for disagreement and discussion on such.

You and I as well as others (if they desire) got to get into a debate on Political Campaign Money Reform Doc. Soft money, PACS and special interest groups swaying our poliitical system and the reason for apathy in this country when it comes to the government and voting.

Couldn't beat them in the regular season and it was not a blow out Doc. The post season may just be a little different for the Colts but would not bet against the Pats.

Like I said, two very well rounded teams who want to win. Both champions in their own right.

And Bammo slides home ---safe!

The 'Mitchell Report': corporate & media steroids witch-hunt

By Mike Gimbel

Published Dec 20, 2007 1:43 AM
On Dec.14, George Mitchell—the former Senate Majority Leader who has served as chairman of the board of the Walt Disney Company and a director of Staples, Inc., as well as a board member of the Boston Red Sox—reported on his “Investigative findings” in the use of steroids in Major League Baseball.
At a Dec. 15 White House news conference, President George W. Bush, former owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team, praised the Mitchell Report. The corporate media attacked the players smeared by Mitchell as “steroid abusers.”
What’s wrong with this picture? Where have we heard all this before?
Remember the other “War on Drugs”? Capitalist politicians crying crocodile tears over drug use led to hundreds of thousands of men and women from the oppressed communities languishing in jails, while drugs continue to flood those communities.
Remember former Secretary of State Colin Powell at the United Nations with all the “proof” that Iraq had “weapons of mass destruction,” resulting in the destruction of a country purely because it sat on a lot of oil?
Why believe the bosses now? Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig represents the owners. It was Bud Selig who unilaterally selected fellow owner George Mitchell to make this “impartial investigation.”
Donald Fehr, executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association, issued a press release response. Here is some of what he said: “Commissioner Selig named former Sen. George Mitchell to investigate steroid use in baseball. This decision was made unilaterally, without prior consultation with the MLBPA. ...We did request a meaningful opportunity to review this lengthy report prior to today, but the request was denied. ...We must remember that a strong collective bargaining relationship requires mutual respect for the agreements that have been reached.”

The “Mitchell Report” is an owners’ attack on the MLBPA, the baseball players’ union.
Competitive edge equals more profits
Have you seen the enormous size of today’s players in the National Football League, college players and even the many high-school football players who weigh 300 pounds and more?
Steroid use is clearly a bigger problem in a sport like the NFL where only 10 drugs are tested for, unlike the 30 tested for in MLB. Yet all attention is focused on the pro baseball players and almost none on the pro football players.
The difference is that the team owners have never been able to defeat the MLBPA over the course of many strikes and lockouts, while the pro football players’ union was defeated in its one attempt at a strike.
Sports are big business. The owners could not defeat the players at the bargaining table, so the owners, in collaboration with the government and the media, are using the steroids weapon to place the MLBPA on the defensive.
It is laughable that these capitalist pirates claim that they care about “sportsmanship” and a “level playing field.” Sports, “amateur” or “professional,” is just like other industries. It is based upon making profits. The players are the commodities used to increase the bottom line.
The New York Yankees have a player payroll that is triple the payroll of many of their competitors. Where is the “level playing field”? College football and basketball are big businesses, while paying nothing to the players. Is that a symbol of “good sportsmanship” or simple greed?
When teams extort millions of dollars from communities by threatening to move to another city, isn’t that an actual crime? When did extortion become legal and a symbol of “good sportsmanship”?
Football injuries are a much greater health risk than steroid use. Alcohol consumption at a game is a much greater health risk than steroid use. Race car drivers and jockeys face huge risks of injury in every race, whereas steroid use is far down the ladder in comparison. Where’s the severe crisis that requires such an “impartial investigation”?
“Performance-enhancing” drugs, secret training methods, specialized sports equipment, etc., have been used and accepted in sports as a way to gain “an edge” for millennia. Why the out-of-proportion media-driven “crisis” over steroids? Every player and every team tries to “get an edge.” It’s an accepted part of sports.
Every time I watch a baseball game or a football game, for instance, I see players trap balls and try to act like they actually caught the ball so as to fool the umpires and referees. In football, the announcers actually criticize a team for failing to quickly snap the ball, thereby preventing the referees or the other team from challenging the play, when they knew that the catch wasn’t made! Isn’t “cheating” being praised in that instance?
The players involved are the victims, no matter how high their salary. I have written several articles in defense of Barry Bonds. Now I’ll have to add Roger Clemens to that defense, although I can’t put an equal sign between them. The years of racist attacks on Barry Bonds cannot be equated with what has just occurred to Roger Clemens. The two players are similar in age and had similar outstanding careers at an advanced age. There were constant rumors of steroid use by Roger Clemens, yet until now it was only on Barry Bonds at whom the corporate media aimed their fire. That’s racism, pure and simple.
Where is the “impartial investigation” into the lies that brought us the Iraq invasion? Where is the “impartial investigation” into torture of prisoners? Where is the “impartial investigation” of the government response to Hurricane Katrina? How does the health risk of steroid use in baseball rank against those items? Far down the list, yet the corporate media play it non-stop on the news.
This is a witch hunt. With the steroids issue the owners and the corporate media are making a mountain out of a mole hill.
The writer is a former consultant on player evaluation for the Boston Red Sox and Montreal Expos and current delegate of Local 375, AFSCME, to the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.

I'll be at that game. I'm a Giants season ticket holder. I'll be freezing while hoping the G-men end the streak.

As for the Colts v. Pats, unless teh Colts get healthy, it won't be a great game. The Colts are looking down right tired. They have lost some big time players, and their TE is still shaken up.

I am looking forward to watch Green Bay. they have a good running game and Farve is playing well. I think they can beat the Cowboys in the rematach. I am hoping for a Colts v. Packers Superbowl, but it will probably be Brady and Company v. the Cowboys.

A Giant fan--season ticket holder--none the less! I'll be Doc, see - another thing we have in common. LOL

My favorite Giant that I can remember was Frank Gifford, but there were so many Huff, Rosey Greer, then moving on to Y A Tittle, LT, Megget, Mark Bavaro, Phil Simms - etc. etc. etc. I wouldn't mind freezing to watch the Giants end the Pats win streak! LOL

I like to see the best two in the SBowl --Pats or Colts against the Pack or Dallass (LOL - not my favorite team but had some excellent players)

I say Pats and Dallass Doc' - But who knows - on any given game an NFL team is capable of beating another one. (You know as well as I do that performance enhancers are a big part of the NFL - College--High School and most likely Pop Warner now.) But yet we ROOT them on or boo em' - something is not right with that picture Doc. Its like we are condoning the practice of performance enhancement as part of the American Sport culture or scene.

Hope to see the two play again in the playoffs.
