I wouldnt be surprised. Hitler made alot of promises to alot of people early on. To bad he didnt keep most of them.

Hitler "said" and "promised" a lot of things. When he achieved his actual goal of becoming the leader of Germany in 1934, just one year later, he set about destroying all who opposed him and all who could oppose him. The last ones he destroyed were the churches. Socialisms of all types refuse to believe that there is any spiritual side of man. Man is merely a beast to be harnessed for labor, according to Marx and Neitzsche.

Hitler insisted on secularism. Priests were arrested, imprisoned, tortured and murdered. Churches were looted and destroyed. All because the churches thought they could go along and get along they paid the price.

The Vatican's seeming compliance with the Nazis probably had a lot to do with the large number of Gestapo surrounding the Vatican and the large number of priests taken hostage. Many people collaborated when they had a gun to their head and a knife to their friend's throat.
