Check this out BJ ---seen this on the news this morning!
May 3 - It looks like any other gas pump in any American town. But, when you look at the price that's when the similarity ends.
Larry Behrendt is one of the lucky members.
"I'm paying 98 cents a gallon for my gas right now."
He can do that because he's a member of "First Fuel Bank".
Jim Fenies who, along with his father Dennis, and his brother Dan, started the bank explained a little bit about how it works.
"We have a lot of the aspects of a money bank. People are making a cash deposit, but they will withdraw gas."
Customers buy their gas in bulk. Then, they use a simple debit card each time they fill up from their reserve. The price remains fixed at what the cost the per gallon was when the member made his or her deposit. When the First Fuel Bank opened in 1982, gas cost a dollar-ten a gallon.
Today, Triple-A says the national average is 2-dollars-91-cents per gallon.
Fenies says the price per member differs depending on when members first made their deposit.
"We currently still have 300 members that are fueling sub1 dollar and literally thousands of members fueling sub 2 dollars per gallon."
Unfortunately, First Fuel is located in Minnesota and has no plans for expanding. You can read more about the First Fuel Bank on their web site: [Only registered and activated users can see links]
