My view is all this activity effectively has taken the place of underground newspapers.
Back in the day, MSM effectively sandbagged a lot of competing POVs in the context of the Viet Nam War. Underground newspapers picked up that slack.
Today I see no instances where this is the case, but blogs and message boards seemed to have filled this niche.
