I truly thrilled about this...

Oscar for Norwegian animated short film

The Norwegian animated short film "The Danish Poet", director Torill Kove, received an Oscar at Sunday's award ceremonies in Hollywood.

This is Norway's first Oscar since Thor Heyerdahl received the award for his documentary on the Kon Tiki Expedition in 1952.

"The Danish Poet" was produced by Lise Fearnely of the Norwegian company Mikrofilm, in cooperation with the National Film Board of Canada.

In the movie we follow a Danish poet, Kaspar, who has lost his creative touch, and sets out for Norway, to meet his great ideal, Sigrid Undset.

"The Danish Poet" was first shown at the Berlin Film Festival in 2006, and has since won several international awards.

About a week ago, Mrs. Kbob and I went to a local movie threatre to see all of the nominees for Best Short Animation, and "The Danish Poet" was by far the best one.

Why is this important?

Of the five, it was the only one NOT animated with 3-D computer graphics. It was it's story and simple attention to detail that won it the big award.

BUT most importantly, the award didn't go to Disney's horrible "Little Matchstick Girl." Based on the Hans Cristian Andersen fairy tale, it was trite, obvious, and stole its character design from a children's book artist named Jerry Pinkney. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE EVEN BEEN NOMINATED in light of some shortlisted masterpieces like "One Rat Short" and Bill Plympton's "Guide Dog."

I was so certain that the same politics that put Disney on the nomination list would have given it the reward. But it didn't. And I'm thrilled.

How cool is that!

Good story KBOB! Thanks!

I remember going to see something called "The Fantastic Film Festival" (or something like that! - Hell, I was only 9 years old, I can't remember)

A lot of short animated films... LOVED IT! Think it probably changed my life!

We don't get many things like this around here... wish I had your movie theatre nearby!
